Getting Familiar with Your Sewing Machine

Do you have a new sewing machine that you’re too intimidated to touch? Or perhaps you inherited one, but it’s just taking up room in your closet? Then this is the class for you!
Marinda will guide you through all the steps needed to use your sewing machine, as well as tips on how to keep your machine running. Learn to thread and wind a bobbin, thread your machine, change needles. and how to properly clean and oil your sewing machine, brush the lint out, and much more! Get familiar with your machine, get familiar with stitches, get familiar with your new skill of sewing.
It is highly encouraged to bring your own machine if you have one (but don’t forget your pedal, power cord, bobbin, and manual!) If you need to reserve one of Willow Oak’s machines, please call in advance to do so, as our machines are limited quantity.
Garment Sewing 101
Have you ever looked at a garment and thought, “I want to make that,” but got lost as soon as you looked at the pattern? How do you decide what type of fabric to use? What is a notion?
In this class you will learn about
- different types of fabrics, threads, and needles
- how to read and understand a paper pattern
- how to alter the pattern to create a garment that will fit
The instructor will walk you through the process of making a mock-up of your chosen pattern, and how to alter the pattern to suit your needs. By the end of the class you will have a full, completed mock-up and the ability to sew your new garment.
Requirements: knowledge and experience with your sewing machine is a must. Previous sewing experience is valuable but not required.
Bring your sewing machine to each class alone with the power cord, pedal, and bobbins.
Machine needle required is a 70/10. Also bring sewing pins, scissors to cut fabric, scissors to cut the pattern, and a measuring tape.
You will receive muslin and thread to create your mock-up.
