Visual Arts: Arts & Crafts (Mixed Media) Classes – Fall 2014

Tuesdays,  4:30 – 6:30 PM 

Session I:  September 30, October 7, 21, 28 (no class Oct 14)  Cost: $100
Session II:  November 4, 11, 18, 25    Cost $100
Session III:  December 2, 9, 16   Cost  $75
Grades K – Adult  (6 years and under must be accompanied by an adult)
Create projects such as clay sculpture, painting, and mosaic tile artwork.

Sept. 30 Clay Sculpture
Students will create a finished clay piece of their choice from photos and sample sculptures, using professional
tools and ideas. The pieces will be kiln-fired to a hard white bisque and be painted in another class.

Oct. 7 Collage (Creating a painting with paper)
The class will begin by cutting images from a collection of art magazines & National Geographics. They will
find a theme in similar colors to cut out and lay pieces out to make a final picture.

Oct. 21 Collage Finishing
After cutting collage pieces out and overlaying them, students will glue all in place and seal the final piece
which is now ready to frame.

Painting Bisque Clay Sculptures
Clay sculptures will be ready to paint in acrylic paints of all colors and ready to seal with a clear acrylic spray.

Oct. 28 Mosaic Art
This class will offer students a choice of wooden shapes to choose from, and a choice of colored tiles, glass,
ceramic pieces, shells, and small jewels in which to use to cover their designs. Wooden crosses are available for
an extra $5.00.

Nov. 4 Clay Pottery and Slab Design
Students will hand build bowls, vases or boxes with lids to hold small treasures. These pieces will be fired to a
white bisque and will be painted in another class.

Nov. 11 Beginners Acrylic Painting
Using real stretched canvases, students will learn to paint a picture using a color scheme, different textures
and shading.

Nov. 18 Papier-mâché (Animal or Mask)
Students will begin by sculpting a form in newspaper and tape; then they will cover their piece with
newspaper strips dipped In papier-mâché paste; after several coats to strengthen it the sculptures will be

Nov. 25 Panting Papier-mâché Sculpture
The dried and hardened papier-mâché objects will be hand painted with acrylic paints and sealed with a clear
spray.
